I am at a loss of words but all I can say now is Zack was so loving and thoughtful. He loved his family and friends so much and he would’ve dropped everything (and has before) to help someone out. His smile was so big and bright, I swear he made anyone smile who came across him. He will be missed forever.

After spending 12 years with Zack as my best friend, its hard to pin point specific memories as all of them seem just as important as the next. He became not only my best friend but my brother and apart of my family. There was a few years while I was traveling or living in different places and spaces, that he was literally at more Gatto family events than I was! Some core memories include going to college and living with each other in Keene, NH, spending time at my house in Vermont and riding at Mount Snow, moving him out to Colorado to my tiny one bed room apartment, and spending countless hours in the rocky mountains going to concerts, fishing, hiking, snowboarding and cowboy camping by fires while sharing stories and planning our next adventure. It still doesn't seem real that I wont be doing any of that with him again physically but deep down I know that he will be with me forever shining on and I will continue to do what we loved together as a tribute to him. My deepest condolences go out to everyone he loved, especially Diane, Mark, Hanna, and Sam McLaughlin. Sending love to everyone that was fortune enough to enjoy the presence of such a beautiful, big hearted human that left us way too soon. The love for Zack and from Zack was real and will never fadeaway <3

My most vivid memory of Zack is when he was about 5 or 6 years old . He and my son Joey both signed up for roller hockey with the PAL at Tappen Beach. They both were so small the equipment barely fit, it was bigger than them.
I was their coach so I have many memories of them but one that sticks out in my mind is getting them both dressed on the store counter at Swim Clean . The first few times I remember the looks both would give me while I strapped on the gear. The looks ranged from excitement and joy to utter fear and confusion. When I would finally put them down on the floor with the roller blade on they would slip and slide all over the place until finally either catching their balance or falling on their butts. The looks were priceless. In the beginning fear then as time went on and their confidence grew shear joy as they both started skating around the store chasing one another. My thought was if Mark sees this they’re both going to get killed.
As the years went by and they improved, the range of emotions shown on their faces went from joy to determination to shear grit and pride in their successes. I will never forget the look on Zack’s face when he came back to the bench after scoring his first goal, he had a smile on from ear to ear. He was laughing with excitement when he proclaimed “ look coach I scored “. I could see the confidence grow fight before my eyes.
I continued to coach Zack and Joey for many years but I’ll never forget that look on his face after scoring that goal. Rest in Peace my young friend, I will miss you deeply but I’ll always crack a smile thinking about those precious memories I have of you.

I’ve been thinking about growing up with Zack all week. He had such an incredible spirit about him. Usually had a card trick he was working on that he would show us in the back of the classroom. We always told jokes and had a lot of laughs together.
There was one time we took a trip up to Joe’s cabin, and on the way there my car broke down. Immediately, Zack knew the problem was with the alternator. I was like “since when are you a mechanic?” It was late at night so we had the car towed to the cabin but once we were there it was stuck. I was so broke at the time and I knew I couldn’t pay for another tow plus the cost to have it fixed.
The next day we got a ride into town and he pointed out the right alternator that I needed so I bought it and one wrench. The whole time I was thinking that there was no way he knew how to fix it. We got back to the cabin and he went right to work on it. It took us all day but we enjoyed a few beers and more laughs while he toiled with it. Finally he told me to start it up and to my surprise, the car turned right on and we were able to get home safely.
He was smart and funny with a great attitude and was always down for an adventure. I hope to carry that with me in his honor. Cheers brother, I hope you’re at peace. We love you.

Zack was like a brother to me. From Locust Valley to Colorado, he and I always stayed so close and shared so many beautiful memories together. Zack and I would drive each other to school. We would take drives around town listening to music and talking about life. In Colorado, Zack and Candice were me and Mackenzie’s first roommates in our new house. We enjoyed Red Rocks shows, camping trips, nights out on the town, takeout and TV nights, the list goes on. Always laughing together and reminiscing on our childhood. I will always remember Zack’s by his infectious smile and positive outlook on life. My heart is with Zack’s family and friends at this difficult time. I will always love you, Zack. An absolute legend!
Love,
Your Friend Casey <3

I remember years back when Marie, my friend and I would talk about her beloved grandson Zachary. She had told me that he was her first grandchild and for that reason, the two of them had such a special and close relationship. Thru the years, Marie would give me news of her loving and caring grandson till the day that she told me that Zack had decided to leave NY for the beautiful state of Colorado because he loved nature and he felt that this state could offer him the beauty and fulfillment that he was searching. I knew that my friend really missed Zach being close to her and her family and living close to all of them but she was excited to know that her beloved grandson had found happiness in his new state. I am devastated to hear this very sad news and my heart and prayers are with Marie, John, Diane and her husband and her 2 beautiful daughters and their whole family,
Madeleine Grunberg.
