Marie Colvin was:
An IAP before the concept became lingua franca
The quintessential kaleidoscopic personality
Always the chameleon
The midnight jet to anywhere just for a party
Friends with every man she loved
An enigma to family
Never defined by others
Intolerant of anyone who lost sight of their destiny
The Definition of the word “Empathetic”
Marie loved:
Watching the morning star fade
Scanning the horizon to capture the “green flash” at sunset
Intimate moments with friends, family and the children of her heart
The imploding world around her
Honesty, veracity, and unquestionable devotion to cause
In life Marie:
Wore the past loosely, like an outgrown gown
Sported an eye patch, lest she forget how fragile life is
Like the City of Paris; her politics had left and right banks
Believed in the philosophy of Teilhard de Chardin and the Liturgy of Nichiren Daishonin
My most treasured possession from Marie:
Is a photograph of Marie taken with a ten year old blond boy who is holding an Uzi machine gun and standing next to an Israeli soldier? On the back she wrote: “Sean Dwyer is a name you will need to grow into and it looks like you are on your way. Your Moms’ curly haired girlfriend, Marie”
My favorite quote from Marie:
“Some of life’s most enigmatic moments leap at you from places you thought you had fully investigated.” Prophetic!

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Marie Colvin. We are writing to express our deepest sympathy for the loss of a loved one and of someone who served as an example to all war correspondents.
Marie was a towering figure among journalists, We shall never forget the outstanding and courageous work she produced in a career spanning 30 years, risking her life to cover many theatres of conflict. The risks were at times very great. Sadly, those risks got the better of her on that fateful day, 22 February, in Homs.
The importance of the role of war correspondent cannot be overstated. Informing the world, reminding us of the horrors of forgotten wars, telling of people’s lives and suffering, these are the means of fighting injustice and barbarity. In this respect, Marie enlightened the world and strove to make it a fairer place.
She was not just a servant of news, she was a servant of humanity. Her stories and reports were vital to us. We shall miss her. We shall miss her narrative of our world.
Please be assured of our warmest support.

On the night of her passing I watched her speak with Anderson Cooper live over the phone reporting on the massacre in Homs and said God be with this brave women. I later woke up that morning and heard the news she had passed. I weeped for hours over her passing for her bravery. God be with her a true angel and true hero.

It is said a person comes into one’s life for a reason, a season or life. Marie’s professional career was beginning as I was retiring. Throughout the years we found ourselves serendipitously together…our meetings culminating in voracious “girl talk”. Her outlook on everything from family to mankind was novel. Marie was the quintessential meaning of “unique”. Please, take comfort from the knowledge...Marie was a positive force in more lives than you will ever be privy. Mine Included!
