MY FRIEND AND I MET NICK AT YOUNGS CEMETERY ON A TRIP TO OYSTER BAY FROM VANCOUVER WASHINGTON.NEEDLESS TO SAY WE HAD A LONG CONVERSATION WITH HIM AND LEARNED A LOT FROM HIM THAT FIRST VISIT. NICK WAS THE TOPIC OF MANY OF OUR CONVERSATIONS FOR MANY YEARS SINCE TO THE POINT THAT HE BECAME THE DESTINATION OF OUR NEXT TWO TRIPS TO LONG ISLAND. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM MOST RECENTLY THIS PAST MAY AND HAD ANOTHER GREAT VISIT AND HE SHARED WITH US MANY STORIES, HISTORICAL AND PERSONAL. I EVEN READ THE OYSTER BAY NEWSPAPER TO SEE IF HE HAS ANY LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. THIS IS HOW I LEARNED OF HIS PASSING. I AM VERY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.

Mary and Family, we are sorry to hear of Nick's sudden death. He was a wonderful Christian husband, father, and grandfather. We were privileged to know him and to receive the wisdom and knowledge he shared with us. We loved how he would look for a reason--any reason--to teach someone something each day of his life. Nick taught us so much about history and politics, art and baseball, theology and family. Renaissance masters, Theodore Roosevelt, the Italian immigrant experience, Joe DiMaggio, the Panama Canal, long division, the LaBella grandkids, Mary at the cross of Jesus, the Battle of the Bulge, and Yankee Stadium. The Lord blessed Nick with a wonderful mind and blessed us with wonderful memories of him. Most of all he is blessed to be a redeemed child of Christ, who now rests in his heavenly glory. May the Lord Jesus comfort you with his promise of the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.

I was a student of Mr. LaBellas at Holy Trinity High School. I always enjoyed his class, and his sense of humor. My condolences to his family. Rest In Peace Mr. LaBella.

I remember when we lived across the street from you, my youngest son Michael was born. Nick drew on a card Michael's name and birthdate. I still have it. Michael just turned 29 Sept. 16. Our deepest sympathy to your family.
