I have found this memorial to James while searching for mention of his youngest daughter, Kathleen, or "Kadi." James was my 5th grade teacher at Bayville Elementary, the year Kadi fell ill. She would die late that summer, as I was entering 6th grade (with Mr. Klein.) Although we lived but a few doors from each other on Highland View Drive, Kadi and I ran in different circles. Nonetheless, among the many gestures children make to each other in the normal course of figuring out the world together, a couple of Kadi's toward me imprinted so deeply that I cannot help but remember her nearly every time I put pen to (lined) paper - a small kindness that has conditioned and blessed every one of my 50 years since.
I remember James, as teacher, parent and neighbor, being what I did not know at the time was nothing short of heroic. He kept faith with his students, introduced me and many others to the link between math and music, chaperoned the annual 5th grade excursion to Frost Valley, waved to my parents when passing on the street, and did not make his suffering ours. I cannot imagine what it is for a father to lose a youngest daughter at any age, but I do know that whatever his private struggle James bore Kadi's death with with what I recall today as my first experience of grace.
I'm very glad to have stumbled upon James' memorial and to be prompted to rejoice in my own life (and little Kadi's contribution to it) through the remembrance of his.

From September, 1962 until June, 1963 I was very blessed to have Mr. James Dougherty as my 6th grade teacher. He was a very kind, caring, compassionate and "tough love" type of teacher. I was going through some tough times with my family during this time. Mr. D. would take the time to sit with me and counsel me and help me to understand things better. He surely knew that the way to reach the mind of any child was by way of the heart. He surely did this on a daily basis in his classroom. Bayville School was one big extended family back then. I could see, even from my 11 year old eyes, that all the teachers cared for each other and for the students. That caring atmosphere carried over into my own adult life when I too became a teacher and modeled my own teaching style after Mr. Dougherty and my other teachers as well. It was great chemistry and gave me a wonderful career as an educator as my own PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION was taken right from those endearing rooms from great educators who worked hard, taught well and opened up new doors of learning to we Bayville kids of the early 60's. Mr. Dougherty was part of that great team of teachers with names like: Upright, Oslansky, Savino, Zeller, Townsend, Tillotson, Wilkens, Summers, Gaul, Sparendei and the rest. We Bayville kids were all very blessed to have had the very BEST of the BEST!!! GOD bless you forever, dear Mr. Dougherty.
