It's surprising how a short relationship keeps popping into my everyday life. Everytime I see the sky or landscape I think of him, he didn't really know my name but he always was so encouraging to keep me trying to acheive what I could. I am not that talented like some but I came to learn what I could about something I had always wanted to do , paint even if it doesn't last forever and I thank him for that...Aren't you proud of that he'd say

So sorry to hear of Attilas passing, and at such a young age.
We met him on our first visit from the Uk to New York and were bowled over by his friendliness and his hospitality. He was a real gentleman. I wish all his family peace and best wishes at this difficult time.

We were shocked and saddened to learn of Attila's sudden passing. Unfortunately we were away on vacation and was not able to attend the service or visitation. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. He left a great legacy in The Stevenson Academy of Fine Arts and I will be forever grateful for his honest feedback and helpful advice he had given me in the short period of time that I knew him. Art was his passion and he conveyed that to all his students. Rest in peace Attila. You will be missed.

I was with Atilla the night he passed as I am one of the sailors anchored in Northport that Saturday night. I attended the wake with Debbie Kossof. Along with her husband, Alan, she was the first to board Atilla's vessel Sunday morning to discover he had passed. Debbie was also the last person to see and speak with him Saturday night.
As we both told all of you in his family at the wake Thurday night, Atilla was with friends his final night and seemed happy. His passing seemed peaceful.
It is so difficult to find words of solace and comfort at times like this. I lost my sister two years ago at 53. I understand your pain and your grief and wish you all peace. May God bless you all, especially your father.
Perhaps the next time I am in Sanibel, we might connect.
Respectfully,
Tom Bensen

This poem written by Audrey Theile so fits Attila.
In this woven web of living
some lives taking, others giving
Some we pass, and some we touch.
While others lives touch ours so much
That part of them becomes our own.
We are the sum of all we've known.
And so it happens, unaware
That when they touch my life, I touch theirs
And while it's true, it's still so strange
You leave no life you've touched unchanged.
so, touch lives gently, giving much,
for who you are -- is who you've touched.
Attila touched and gave all and left a part of himself with all of us.

I was only privileged to know Attila for this past year when I had taken his incredible Fundamentals course. Unfortunately, I had to miss the last two classes due to a car accident; I never did get to paint the pitcher.
I love when talented people delight in sharing their wealth of knowledge with others. And Attila surely did. As a muralist, my work has greatly improved since his course. I finally "got" many aspects of perspective that I was unable to before his instruction.
My deepest regrets to his family and friends. But please know that he certainly has left a mark on all of his students. He was such an inspiration, and I will NEVER forget him.

Dear Aggie, Mary, Dennis, Mr. Hejja and family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family in these moments. I remember when Attila was 14 and I was 16, when we were in High School Art Club together. He told me that he wanted to be an artist but he was distressed - he didn’t believe that he could do it. I wouldn't let him get away with that, and encouraged him to come study at Stevenson's where I was taking lessons. Remember I used to pick him up from your house to go to art class? We were both insanely dedicated students, willing to give up all our Friday nights in high school to take art lessons! And it was worth it, for both of us.
I would like to share with you one of my favorite inspirational pieces from Henry Van Dyke, which seems especially appropriate for Ati with its maritime symbolism. I read it recently at my mother’s memorial service:
I am standing on the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud, just where the sky and sea come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says: "There, she's gone!"
Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her; and just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There, she's gone," there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "There she comes!"
Love,
Meryl Ann Butler

The world has lost a treasured friend whose contributions as a person, an artist and a teacher will always be treasured. Attila's passing leaves a hole in the hearts of those who knew him. I have always felt so fortunate to have had him as my painting instructor. Thank you Attila for helping me to see through different eyes. May you rest in the knowledge that your dream was fulfilled.

My heart goes out to the family of Attila.
I am shocked and saddened and just
read an e-mail sent to me of the news.
Attila last year gave a show in memory of
my husband Steven Rettegi. He said it
was pay back time for what my husband
had done for him. I will never forget his
kindness for the wonderful occassion we
had!! I am Steven's widow and could
not have done this beautiful show with-
out Attila.
I am so sorry he had to leave so early.
All my love to his sister who helped
also in this endeavor.
Sincerely with tears,
Myrna Rettegi

I began taking sculpture classes at the Academy not long after it first opened. How very sad that Attila has been taken so young. When I first met Attila, what struck me most was how proud and happy he was that the school had opened it's doors! I know that he will be deeply missed but I hope that his dream lives on for many many years to come.

Hun- we hoisted many jars together, shared many a laugh, and I had the privilege of teaching at your academy. You achieved your goals, you ate and drank well, loved well, had many friends--in short--you lived a full life in the time that you had. Your memory, as well as your art, will live long into the future.
Your friend,
W. ADAM MANDELBAUM ESQ.

Attila - our teacher, our inspiration our greatest fan. He taught us how to see, how to draw and paint. We had so many laughs both in Seacliff and Oyster Bay. He always had a story about "Old Man Stevenson", his life, he made us laugh. He shared unselfishly his art, his knowledge, his time and his love of art and life with all of us. I am so going to miss him. My heart hurts. Dear Attila there will never be anyone like you ever again.
