Obituary of Frances Virginia Cucci
Frances was born on Irving Place, Oyster Bay, on November 19, 1918. She had nine siblings; five brothers and four sisters. She never married but tended to her parents until their deaths.
She worked for Steadman's Factory which was located where the LECOB Senior Center is now. She also worked Doubleday Publishing in Garden City and Columbia Carbon & Ribbon in Glen Cove. She learned to drive later in life and enjoyed it very much.
Although she only had a high school education, she was quite fluent in Italian and French as well as a little Spanish. She had a thirst for knowledge and always kept up with current events. She helped her dad study for his citizenship status and was so proud when he became an American citizen (he said it was one of the happiest days of his life).
She was a fun person who loved the beach, reading, animals (especially dogs), music and dancing. She also had a lovely singing voice and would often sing along with the radio.
She and her mom were regulars on Saturday nights at the Lyric Theatre (where Town Hall Annex is now located). There was a game called LUCKY which was very much like Bingo with cash prizes. Her mom was pretty lucky at the game, but Fran would have to go on stage to select the cash envelope.
If you had a problem, you could go to Aunt Fran and she would calmly evaluate the situation and offer wise advice. You could also confide in her and your confidence was never disclosed.
She enjoyed traveling and would tell you her trip to Egypy, Italy and Israel was the highlight of her life. She was a devout Catholic and marveled that she was able to see the Holy Land and walk where Jesus walked. She also enjoyed road trips with her older sister Marie and brother-in-law Matt to many destinations in the USA. She was always great company and enjoyed these trips immensely.
She loved to entertain and welcomed anyone to her home. She was great hostess, a fairly good cook, but an excellent baker. Her specialties were cheesecake, apple pie and her exceptional "butterflies"- everyone raved about them.
She loved children and would never turn down a request to baby sit for her nieces, nephews and neighbors. The kids all enjoyed her amusing stories, projects and activities that she would participate in. She also instilled in them the value of honesty and loyalty to God, family and country.
She was never hospitalized until she suffered a minor fall in her late nineties just prior to becoming a resident of Harbor House.
When asked the secret of her longevity, her answer: "I never married so I never had to worry about a husband!"
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Dominic RC Chapel, Oyster Bay, NY on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery
