Obituary of Douglas G. Griffin, Jr.

Douglas Griffin Jr., a man of boundless creativity, unwavering determination, and profound love for his family, passed away peacefully at his home on May 8, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on June 12, 1942, in New York City to immigrant parents, Doug Griffin Sr. from Cornwall, England, and Amalia Horvath of Budapest, Hungary, Doug was raised on the Lattingtown estate of the Baker family.

From his upbringing alongside the Long Island Sound, Doug developed a lifelong passion for sailing, fishing, and all things nautical, believing fervently in the healing powers of saltwater. Educated at St. Dominic’s elementary school and High School, Doug briefly attended college at Dayton before venturing into the workforce, with Gruman.

However, it was his love for boats and his innovative spirit that led him down a new
path. Transitioning into boat design and construction, Doug founded his own company, specializing in the creation of unique houseboats, including the distinctive round boat that graced Cold Spring Harbor. Later, he expanded his expertise into the realm of remodeling and restoration work, leaving his mark on many historic estates and homes in the area. His clients appreciated his imaginative, intuitive design and his meticulous attention to detail.

A true craftsman and mentor, Doug believed strongly in the value of skilled trades, passing on his knowledge to others and providing opportunities for those eager to learn. He was a man of intellect and ingenuity, excelling in mathematics, geometry, and physics, yet always grounded in the belief that success could be found through hard work and dedication.

In 1963, Doug married the love of his life, Kathy, whom he had met during his high school years. Together, they celebrated 60 years of marriage and welcomed four awesome children into the world: Felicia, Lisa, Doug, and Dani. Devoted to their Catholic faith, Doug and Kathy actively participated in their parish community, volunteering and sharing their wisdom and guiding others through pre-Cana sessions. Doug cherished time spent with family, whether it be on the beach, traveling in their motorhome, singing to 70’s tunes, visiting museums, playing games or simply enjoying each other’s company at home. His love knew no bounds, extending to his 10 beloved grandchildren, Griffin, Thomas, Alice, Morgan, Emma, Ryan, Bradey, Maggie, Peter, Joseph, whom he adored and took great pride in.

Despite facing adversity following a stroke in 1995, Doug remained resolute in his determination to persevere. Though his disability forced him to retire from his construction business, he continued to work tirelessly as a caretaker and property manager, demonstrating unwavering strength and resilience. His unwavering spirit, coupled with his infectious smile, sense of humor, and genuine warmth, endeared him to all who knew him. While he was a man of few words, he conveyed so much.

In the quiet moments of reflection, Doug will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished Pop-pop. His legacy of resilience, kindness, and love will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him. 

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; his children, Felicia Sperry (Christopher), Lisa Lattomus (Thomas), Douglas Griffin, III (Sheila), Danielle (Bradley); his grandchildren, Griffin (Molly), Thomas, Alice, Morgan, Emma, Ryan, Bradley, Maggie, Peter and Joseph: and many other family and friends.
