I was good friends with Walter Benka Jr. He and I both attended Mandalay Elementary School. Since Walter's house was on the way to school, I would stop by every day so we could walk together. Often my friend struggled to get out on time, so on the days we were running late, Mr. Benka would drive us the two blocks to school, often in his potato chip delivery truck or his Hostess truck. What a trill to pull up to school in a rumbling truck to turned every kids' head! I remember Mr. Benka being a warm, friendly guy, who always had a story to tell. I felt welcomed at the Benka house in Wantagh, and I'm so sorry to hear that Mr. Benka is no longer with us. He will be missed.

Walter was always warm , kind , and fun. We always loved to be around him. Even though we didn’t see him much lately it was always like we saw him yesterday.
Running the Marathon with him was a highlight!!
He had such a great spirit and will be missed.
Sending love Cathy and Joey❤️❤️

Uncle Walter, or as my husband Miguel would say Uncle Salsa. Miguel and I met in a Salsa dancing class. To make Miguel feel welcome to the family, Uncle Walter came out salsa dancing one night with us. It was awesome, he would laugh and smile and be completely out of his comfort zone but did that to make someone else feel welcomed and invited into our family. He always had the biggest smile and an even bigger heart. He was a man who was confident in himself and loved to show how much he truly loved his family. I remember watching him holding hands with Aunt Linda walking on the boardwalk at Jones Beach. He was such an affectionate man and gave the biggest hugs. His face just lit up whenever he mentioned Jacob and Emma. We lost a wonderful man, but I know his memories live on in me, as I am sure there are many many memories that others may share that will live on in them. We will miss you Uncle Walter/Salsa!

Uncle Walter was the best person. He always made me laugh with his stories. Heavens really got a good one! I will always remember and appreciate how much you helped me in my teenage years. Mom absolutely adored you! It was always the highlight of her visits to NY to spend time with you and Aunt Linda. Man, we are all going to miss you!

Uncle Walter your life deserves a true celebration. A kid from impossibly hard times who went out into the world with nothing, and then not only made something great of yourself, but made something greater out of everything you touched. You and Aunt Linda formed a partnership that spanned over 50 years, built a wonderful family and still continued to help all of the family around you. You were loving and affectionate and so funny! One of my favorite stories you used to tell was about riding into the country in a packed car with several of your siblings and my mom while my Dad, another Walter, was driving. Apparently you kids tortured my dad all the way up on the drive, for several hours… but he had the last laugh, going all ‘The Shining Jack Nicholson’ on all of you and chasing you through the cabin in the woods with an axe in a theatric revenge gambit! I am going to miss you! We all love you so dang much!
Your god daughter and niece, Teresa

The world lost a very special person. Walter was the most sensitive and caring people I have ever met. He was truly one of a kind and he was loved and will be missed by all.
