Obituary of Woodrow J. Elmore
Dr. Woodrow J. Elmore, 77, of Bayville, NY, passed away on November 25, 2022.
Woodrow was born in Manhattan and graduated from Manhattan College. He
went on to receive his doctorate in math education from Teachers’ College,
Columbia University. Although a math educator, he was very curious about the
world and also earned degrees in history and philosophy.
Woodrow taught math in the New York Public Schools for over 30 years and, for
20 years, was an adjunct professor at Suffolk Community College and an assistant
professor of math education at Touro College.
He was train enthusiast and he traveled far and wide to see and ride different
railways. Woodrow was particularly interested in European railways and rode
whenever he got the chance. He had a great love for Amtrak and he rode our USA
trains whenever he could. Woodrow was also interested in model trains, most
especially, the Lionel brands. Woodrow would travel to model railroad conventions
see model trains in beautiful settings. Woodrow made a point to travel to train
nostalgia tours where he would ride on retired trains. Woodrow also had a great
fondness for beagles and hounds and, from childhood, always had a beagle or a
hound in his life.
Beloved brother of Jessie and Zora Ann. Devoted best friend of Liz DeFreitas. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
