From Thomas D. McLaughlin--Roberts Son
A REFLECTION
Thank you Dad.
When a person moves on from this life on earth we inscribe on their monument or tombstone the year of birth, a dash, and the year of passing.
The information and detail comprising that "dash" is worth highlighting.
This life was;
A life lived well
A life lived long
A life of dedication to his beloved wife, mom, extended to his children,
their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren.
He was further defined by an unwavering devotion to God and Country.
We will not see his kind again.
Truly a member of America’s Greatest Generation; born into the Great Depression, he left home at seventeen and served with honor during World War 2 in Pacific Theatre in the Navy . He survived a devastating attack on his ship near Iwo Jima at age 19 which claimed many shipmates and friends.
Dad held onto some truly moving correspondence he shared with his brother Joe from this historic event. To read these notes between two young brothers was a privilege.
They are amazing in their simplicity and authentic mutual devotion.
I recommend reading them to all.
The depression and war years were dramatic, life shaping events.
He never tired of sharing stories of those years in service to his country.
World War Two duties complete, he returned home to Corona, New York, married Mom as soon as he could do so, and together they began a large family of 8 children comprised of six sons bookended by two very special daughters.
A moment to touch upon a bit of historical perspective and trivia.
Charles Lindbergh flew the first airplane from New York to Paris when Dad was 2 yrs old.
Television, an invention which was a very important part of his life, was
introduced to a very limited extent in 1927 just after his second birthday.
When he was 45 men were walking on the moon. Just a few decades after Lindbergh flight. Those first steps captured by television cameras.
In 1925, the year of his birth, trolley cars were not yet replaced with buses.
Those are just a sample of literally, hundreds of innovations and significant historical events which occurred during this full life.
Point is this; this life included a front row-seat for many amazing historical events.
Professionally, he embarked upon a distinguished career in the NYPD where he was cited for heroism numerous times, including a Medal of Valor. He attained the rank of Detective Captain.
A published author of several novels, their subject matter derived from his colorful police career.
He was an accomplished self - trained artist whose paintings hang in our homes.
He was an avid reader who passed along this love of reading to his children.
A handyman who was there at anyone’s home with his toolbox at the first mention of some household challenge, first call went out to him when something broke or stopped working in your house.
Traveling to many places throughout the world in retirement with Mom at his
side was a great phase in life, but those travel adventures paled in
comparison with the joy of the many summers he spent quietly enjoying the company of Mom and the simple beauty of his beloved summer home in Nassau Point.
He always accompanied a note to family or friends with some sort of humorous cartoon character illustrating a well developed and creative sense of humor.
His grandchildren delighted in seeing him and anxiously awaited a card from him because they featured personalized cartoons created just for each of them.
He got to meet and hold yet another generation of his legacy in his great grandchildren.
Always made sure to proudly wear a t-shirt or hat with one of the many college names of the schools his grandchildren attended. ....Often a combination of at least two schools was his outfit, clashing colors or rivalries be damned.
He was a person of tremendous generosity; he never missed an opportunity to quietly help out or simply gift a few dollars. This trait was not limited to assisting family.
Meanwhile, he hadn’t bought a new suit for himself in nearly 50 years.
Dad exemplified strength and dignity in spite of saying goodbye to the love of
his life, mom. We were concerned about how he would endure this sad farewell.
Our concerns were allayed as Dad once again, stepped up.
He was a great example and source of comfort for his family instead of the other way around.
Strength and dignity were available to embrace, admire, and share with our extended families.
His faith and devotion to God were sincere, unqualified, and of great comfort throughout his long life.
He endured. Even well into his 90’s could eat like a teenager. Wings,
steak, hero’s, you name it. A true child of the depression, he never wasted food and was surely a founding member of the clean plate club. He enjoyed humor and could laugh and bust chops with the best of them. He was very funny, if a bit politically incorrect, to put it mildly.
It’s hard to imagine how much he missed Mom and how he looked forward to holding her hand for eternity when God called him to his reward.
Yes, this life had so much contained in that small mark - this dash - it was
so full and will never again have the same significance when we see it on a
Monument or remembrance. The dash holds a great treasure. His memory is our treasure.
Some things simply cannot be captured and conveyed chiseled in stone or committed to paper.
His journey and work is finished, his job was done well. The peace and rest he will enjoy in heaven are well earned.
Until we see you again, and answer your favorite question..."whats doin'?",
We will miss you.
Farewell and thanks again,
Dad.
Give Mom a hug for us all.

To all the McLaughlin "kids" - I am so sorry to hear about your dad's passing. Growing up right across the street there are so many memories I have about your dad - but I did want to share one that I doubt many know and where he saved my 10th grade Spanish grade!
It was June 1986 and finals were in session at Herricks; I overslept and woke up panicked that I was already 15 minutes late for the Spanish final. I got dressed, jumped on my bike and started ripping to the high school as fast as I could. I got to Center Street and realized I forgot my pencils....so I rode back to the house and now realizing how late I was I desperate to find a faster way. So I ran across the street, knocked on your front door - your dad answered and came to my rescue! He drove me to the school; I took the test and all ended well.
Your dad was always great to talk to, he always asked me about my running, always engaging in conversation and expressing true interest. I'm so grateful that he, your mom (and all of you) were our neighbors growing up.
God Bless all of you - Bill Taylor (15 Goodrich)

To Bob’s family,
Joe and I were saddened to hear of your dad’s passing. We have known and loved your family for close to 50 years. Your mom and dad were one of the first people to welcome us when we moved onto Goodrich St. in 1971 and we realized immediately they were special people with a wonderful family.
Your mom was the essence of grace and your dad had a humorous way about him, always at the ready with a joke or funny anecdote.
We will miss Bob, but know he has his final reward.
