I just learned today that Ken had passed when I had lunch with an ICU nurse named Tom who had worked with Ken and I at Lahey Clinic in 1994-1995. Ken had just graduated from medical school and was a 24 year old intern in the summer of '94 while I was a first-year pulmonary/critical care fellow. Although he was extremely humble and not given to showing off, it became quickly clear on ICU rounds that Ken had an astounding fund of medical knowledge as we discussed patients on rounds and the attending physicians probed the depth of his medical knowledge. He also from day one had precocious clinical judgment, was highly adept at ICU procedures, and proved unflappable even when the ICU was filled with critically ill patients and the rest of us were all highly stressed. As an intern he was one of the most trusted physicians in the hospital. Despite his intellectual brilliance what struck me was how that was married to an unusual maturity and generosity of spirit. I remember how one time a visiting international medical student who had no car told me Ken had given them a ride home a few times even though it was 20 minutes out of his way and he was working over 80 hours a week in the days before physician trainees' work hours were carefully regulated. Another time when I was going through a tough stretch and had embarrassed myself, without my saying a word to him about the matter he approached me, patted me on the shoulder, and said "Hang in there. I know how you feel", and I believed he did. I instantly felt significantly better. Ken was a genius who was also truly a wonderful human being and the best colleague one could ever hope to have. I am saddened not only for his loss but also for his family who must miss him much more than all the patients and colleagues who were lucky enough to be treated by and collaborate with him.

While in training, I worked with many different physicians over the years but my few days seeing patients with Dr. Carnevale stood out. He always had a smile, was an excellent communicator with his patients, had a positive attitude in a busy workplace, made time for his colleagues & staff and was a great teacher. In my mind, he set the perfect example for a young physician like myself. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

My father, Frank Carnevale, was a patient of Dr. Carnevale’s. He always spoke so highly of him and apparently they’d share laughs about the common last name. When my father passed away I called the office to cancel an upcoming appointment that he had with Dr. Carnevale. I left a message and got a phone call from him expressing his deep condolences. I was very touched by that. I am so sorry to learn of his passing. My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.

I visited the OCLI website this morning and went to read Dr. Carnevale's biography, and was quickly saddened. My longtime partner Louise Civello was his patient in 2008-9 for double retina lasic and prep for double cataract surgery with Dr. Swerdin. Ay any given time, Louise would have 10 doctors. Out of all of them, he was the most kind, gentle and compassionate.Having severe neuropathy, she couldn't keep her chin steady for the long series of eye tests. Dr. Carnevale calmly asked me to hold her head steady. Thanks to his calm, patient demeanor, I had no problem helping out. On one visit, the doctor had to rush out because his wife was in an accident. We were so worried till Louise's next visit when we found out she was fine. I hope the family has found some comfort in seeing how loved he was by everyone who met him. I'm sure Louise and all the other angels in heaven welcomed him warmly. RIP Good Doctor

Dr. Carnevale became my retina doctor after hearing many others praise him.
Early in 2013 when I saw him, he told me of his holiday trip to India to visit his wife's family. He shared how much his children loved meeting their cousins and how wonderful the trip was. It was apparent how much his family meant to him.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family in this time of loss and grief.

Our family was heartbroken to learn the news of Ken's passing. He exuded such tremendous love and devotion to his family. I have so many memories seeing him at the school playground proudly carrying his son on his shoulders and watching his beautiful girls play on the playground with such joy. He was the dad who showed up to carve pumpkins at school, jumped at the chance to dress up with his kids on Halloween, showed up at every concert we ever went to at school and glowed at any mention of his family. Ken was so welcoming to our family in his home and always exuded kindness and friendship to all around him. We hold his family in our prayers. He will be sorely missed by all.

Dr. Carnevale is a great man and I will miss him. I met him at a scary time in my life, almost losing sight in one of my eyes. And he, more than anyone else, took the time to explain my problem in a way that I would understand. He would say, "Your awful young to have this, but we will fix it." and I couldn't wait to talk to him, I would have my questions written out and start asking two at a time and he said, "slow down, you're putting the cart before the horse." I've used that line dozens of times since then. I looked up to him not just as my doctor but as almost a life coach on how to deal with other situations calmly. He walked me through fear and because of him I actually looked forward to getting a needle in my eye. My condolences to his family, my heart goes out to them and everyone's life he touched.

Although I knew him for several years, having worked for him, I only recently met him this past spring. I knew he was a warm, genuine, wonderful person, and meeting him just reinforced all of that. He had an extraordinary gift, and words cannot adequately describe how much he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Carnevale's passing. He was truly an amazing person. Always a complete pleasure to work with and I am grateful to have had the pleasure of working alongside him. He was loved by all and there was never a moment where he didn't demonstrate his love for his family and his passion for helping others. I will forever keep his memory in my heart and when ever I think of him I still hear him saying "sweet!!"
My most sincere condolences to Dr. Carnevale's family. May you find peace in your heart.

Ken is one of the finest men I have ever known. The times we spent together in internship and as we made our way out into the world after training provide memories I will always cherish. Late nights in the hospital were a catalyst to a true friendship. I wish we had stayed closer and I am sorry we did not. God bless my friend.

Having known Dr. Carnevale was an honor and a privilege. I knew that any patient I referred to Dr. Carnevale would be cared for like family. This is a devastating loss for the profession, his friends and colleagues but especially for his family. There are no words to describe the helplessness we all feel but I pray for Sima and family to find strength during MOST difficult time. Our prayers are with you!

What I will remember most about Ken is the way his face would light up when you asked about his children. I would say, Ken, how are your babies?, even though they were not babies anymore. This amazing smile would light up his face and he would stop what he was doing and tell you what each one of them was doing new in their lives. Oh how he loved those babies and his beautiful Sima. My heart hurts for all of you.

Dr. Carnevale was one of the first people I would see in the morning before the school day started. He always passed through the science hallway to take his kids to school and was so happy and positive. Dr. Carnevale always said hello or good morning with a smile. I will miss him for his sincere kindness.

ken was just an awesome guy and i'm in utter shock that he is no longer with us; we trained at the Lahey together and then he was also in my wife's med program. He was one of the most darn-to-earth guys that I know and with so much skill; we had dinner 18 months ago and talked about our families and how it meant so much to him. The world is one angel more but one great human being less. We will miss you Ken and your legacy will continue with Sima and the kids! Jai & Swati

Dr. Carnevale was and always will be a valuable member of the OCLI family. He exhibited extraordinary calm under pressure. Ken exuded sincere warmth and friendly feelings for everyone he met or worked with. He has patients who love him, friends who value his opinions, co-workers who looked to him for leadership. Ken is one of those special people who has left an indelible mark on me and others who worked for him. He was an exceptional Partner for Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island and will be missed greatly by me and many, many, others. My condolences to his entire family.

This is so sad to us. Dr Carnevale was so admired by his workers as well as us. He recently did surgery on my wifes eye. She loved going to him, she felt extremely cared by him and was extremely nice and polite. We will miss him dearly. Respectfully, Lou and Judi Russo
